The story of Blakely
Vowel length carried meaning in Old English, and when the length distinctions collapsed a number of words fell together. Blaec and blac is the most striking pair, since the two words are opposites: one gives black and the other gives bleach, bleak and the archaic blake, meaning pale or yellow. Their merger is why the surname Blake is genuinely ambiguous and why medieval records show men called Blake who are described as fair. English has a few other such collisions. Cleave means both to split and to cling, from two separate verbs. Let meant both to allow and to hinder, which survives in a let in tennis. Sanction means to approve and to punish. Naming vocabulary is more affected than most, because a nickname's whole content is one descriptive word, and if the word merges with its opposite the name loses its meaning entirely.

Old English blaec or blac, black or pale
Blakely is an English place name and surname, joining Blake to leah, a wood or clearing, giving either the dark clearing or the pale one. The ambiguity is real and old: Old English blaec, black, and blac, pale or shining, differed only in vowel length and merged, so the surname Blake has two opposite possible meanings. The American peak of the male name is 1990.
