Bernie
Masculine · “bear”
Bernie is given to both — 9,225 boys and 1,535 girls since 1880. See Bernie as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Bernie is on the register for both sexes because it serves three different full names: a man's, a woman's and another woman's, all built on the same Germanic front. Very few short forms cover that much ground, and it is the reason this one has never been reliably sexed in a hundred and forty years of American records.

The story of Bernie
The most consequential Bernard was an abbot who talked Europe into a war he then had to explain. He was the most influential churchman of his century, effectively arbitrating disputes that popes could not settle, and when the crusader states asked for help he preached the expedition across France and Germany with enormous success. It failed completely: the armies were destroyed, the campaign achieved nothing, and Bernard spent his remaining years writing defenses of it that read, in places, like a man arguing with himself. He also wrote some of the most tender devotional prose of the Middle Ages. The combination is not unusual in the period, and it is a useful corrective to the idea that a saint's name comes with a simple story attached.
Meaning
bear
All the parent names begin with the Germanic element naming the bear, which is itself a substitute word rather than the inherited one. What follows differs: brave in one name, victory in another, strength in a third, and the short form keeps none of it. So the meaning it carries is the first element only, which is the usual situation for a clipping.
How the name formed
- A Germanic element naming the bear
- Bernard, Bernice and Bernadette built on it
- Bernie serving all three as a short form
- Recorded for both sexes throughout

The Oran test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Bernie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oran climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oran's path sketches the road Bernie is walking now.
Bernie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and universally understood without explanation.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It functions as a full name and as a short form simultaneously.
- People will ask what it is short for, and there are three possible answers.
- It is strongly associated with one American generation and reads as older than it is.
- The spelling competes with Burnie and Birnie in older records.
