Babette
Feminine · “foreign”
Babette is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 3,282 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Barbarian is an imitation of a sound. The Greeks called anyone who did not speak Greek a barbaros, and the word is onomatopoeic — it is what unintelligible speech sounded like to them, a repeated bar-bar. Barbara is the feminine of that word, which makes it one of the very few names built out of a joke about not understanding people.

The story of Babette
Saint Barbara was one of the most venerated saints of the Middle Ages, invoked against lightning and sudden death, and her name was everywhere in Europe. French produced Barbe and then the diminutives Babette and Babet, which also serve Elisabeth by a separate road. Babette entered English use in the nineteenth century as a French name rather than a shortening, and American records show it from 1891 with a peak in 1961 — a period when French names carried a particular kind of chic here.
Meaning
foreign, strange-speaking
From the Greek barbaros, a foreigner — formed in imitation of the sound of speech the Greeks could not follow. Barbara is the feminine. Babette is the French diminutive, and it shortens both Barbe, the French Barbara, and Elisabeth, whose short forms in French run through Babet and Babette.

The Karlene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Babette's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Karlene climbed just as high around 1939, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Karlene's path sketches the road Babette is walking now.
Babette sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a genuine French diminutive rather than an American invention.
- Babs and Bette are both available and belong to different registers.
- The etymology is genuinely funny and takes one sentence to tell.
- Two syllables with a firm stress, so it is rarely said wrong.
- It reads as a French name to Americans and carries a certain mid-century flavor with it.
- It shortens two entirely different full names, so the question of what it is short for has no single answer.
- It is recorded for boys as well as girls, though nearly all are girls.
