The story of Aza
The very short vowel-heavy names of American records between about 1880 and 1930 are a distinct stratum: Ada, Ida, Ola, Ona, Etta, Iva, Eva and Aza appear together, decline together and are gone by the Second World War. Many of them were built rather than inherited, made from a sound the family liked or from a longer name that has not survived alongside them, and they are the direct ancestors of the modern coinage habit even though they look nothing like it. Aza's best year on file is 1926, at the tail of that period. The Hebrew and Arabic names of the same spelling are older and continue independently in their own communities.

strong, or a gazelle fawn
Several unrelated candidates. Hebrew azzah means strong or fierce, and is the Hebrew name of the city called Gaza in English. Arabic Azza is a separate name, traditionally read as a young gazelle. A third possibility is that the American Aza is simply a written short form built from initials or from a longer name, with no source language at all, which the 1920s records make quite likely.

Two syllables, stress on the first. The Arabic Azza has a doubled z that is genuinely held longer, which the single-z spelling does not show.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Three letters, a palindrome, and impossible to misspell once heard.
- Works in Hebrew, Arabic, Russian and English settings without adaptation.
- Extremely rare in the United States while being entirely easy to say.
- Two unrelated Semitic names share the spelling and neither may be yours.
- Asa is a much better-known name that sounds nearly identical, and will be substituted.
- It is short enough that people will assume it is initials or an abbreviation.
