The story of Asa
Asa king of Judah removed his grandmother from her position as queen mother for making an idol, and the text notes he was diseased in his feet in old age and sought physicians rather than the Lord — a pointed remark given his name. Japanese Asa means morning. Both reach American records, where it is in current use.
Meaning
healer; morning
From the Hebrew asa, generally read as 'healer' or 'physician'. A separate Japanese asa, 朝, means 'morning' and is used for girls. A third Scandinavian Åsa comes from the Norse for a god. All three are genuine and unrelated.

About 1 girl in 17,470 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 21,720 for Asa itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Cayce test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Asa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cayce climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cayce's path sketches the road Asa is walking now.
Asa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- That a king named 'healer' is said to have sought physicians instead of God is a first-rate irony.
- The Japanese morning meaning is a second genuine and lovely reading.
- Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk in English.
- The three origins are entirely unrelated and said differently.
- In Hebrew and English use it is more often masculine.
- It is very short and can be swallowed by a long surname.
