The story of Cayce
The other Cayce is a place, and it gave a railwayman his nickname. The engineer who died with his hand on the brake of a train outside Vaughan, Mississippi, and became the subject of one of the best-known American ballads, was christened John Luther Jones and was called Casey after the town of Cayce in Kentucky where he had grown up. The spelling shifted on the way into the song. So the two names on this page belong to a man who dictated in his sleep and a man who was named after a town, and both are pronounced identically and spelled differently, which is a fair summary of the whole problem with American given names.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The surname's origin is not settled. It is probably a variant of Casey, itself from an Irish surname built on a word for vigilant or watchful, but the American spelling with a y and a c has been treated as a separate name for long enough to make the connection uncertain. Nothing in it describes a person.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ce at the end is said as a plain s, which is the ordinary English treatment of a c before an e, so the spelling is unambiguous once seen.

Fashion outlook
Cayce sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, easy to say and unambiguous once the spelling has been seen.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The name has two documented American bearers with very different stories.
- Casey is enormously commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
- The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
- It reads as a surname and will be entered in the wrong column on forms.
