The story of Cayce
The other Cayce is a place, and it gave a railwayman his nickname. The engineer who died with his hand on the brake of a train outside Vaughan, Mississippi, and became the subject of one of the best-known American ballads, was christened John Luther Jones and was called Casey after the town of Cayce in Kentucky where he had grown up. The spelling shifted on the way into the song. So the two names on this page belong to a man who dictated in his sleep and a man who was named after a town, and both are pronounced identically and spelled differently, which is a fair summary of the whole problem with American given names.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The surname's origin is not settled. It is probably a variant of Casey, itself from an Irish surname built on a word for vigilant or watchful, but the American spelling with a y and a c has been treated as a separate name for long enough to make the connection uncertain. Nothing in it describes a person.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cayce went to 13 boys in 2025, but Kayce, Kaycee and Kaize and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 917, which makes it the 343rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,103 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 1,863 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 131,390 for Cayce itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Marvyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cayce's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marvyn climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marvyn's path sketches the road Cayce is walking now.
Cayce sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Short, easy to say and unambiguous once the spelling has been seen.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The name has two documented American bearers with very different stories.
- Casey is enormously commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
- The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
- It reads as a surname and will be entered in the wrong column on forms.
