The story of Ayub
Job loses everything and argues with God about it across forty chapters — one of the oldest and strangest books in the Hebrew Bible. The Quran names Ayyub as a prophet whose endurance is rewarded. The name is used across the Muslim world, and South Asian and African emigration brought it to America, where it is in current use.
Meaningscholars disagree
persecuted, one who returns
Through the Hebrew Iyyov, whose meaning is genuinely unsettled — proposals include 'persecuted', 'hated', and a root about returning or repenting. Arabic took it as Ayyub. The Quran names him among the prophets and praises his patience. Nothing about the etymology is established.

About 1 boy in 13,139 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 20,095 for Ayub itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rashaud test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ayub's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rashaud climbed just as high around 1993, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rashaud's path sketches the road Ayub is walking now.
Ayub sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One of the most philosophically serious books of the Bible belongs to him.
- The same figure is a prophet in Jewish, Christian and Islamic tradition.
- It is used across Arabic, Turkish, Urdu and Malay naming.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled, and honest sources say so.
- The story attached to it is one of catastrophic loss.
- Ayyub and Eyüp are both established forms.
