Where it comes from

The story of Sammy

Samuel is the prophet who anoints the first two kings of Israel, and the name reached English through the Reformation, becoming a Puritan and then a general favorite. American families registered its pet forms as legal names from the nineteenth century, and Sammy — the -y spelling — appears in the registers alongside Sammie, peaking around 1930.

God has heard

From the Hebrew Shemu'el, usually read as shama, 'he heard', plus el, 'God'. The Book of Samuel gives a different explanation in Hannah's mouth, connecting the name to sha'al, 'to ask', because she asked for him — which fits Saul's name better than Samuel's. Both readings are in the text.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sammy went to 85 boys in 2025, but Sami and Samy are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 308, which makes it the 636th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,216 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 5,546 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 20,095 for Sammy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
