The story of Aylene
Aveline came to Ireland with the Normans and was gaelicised as Eibhlín, which English speakers then re-anglicized in a dozen ways. Eileen became the standard English spelling and was very common in America in the 1910s and 1920s. Aylene appears in the same years, peaking in 1915, and its ay spelling records an American pronunciation with a long A at the front rather than the long E of Eileen — a genuine difference in sound, not only in letters.
Meaningscholars disagree
Uncertain; probably from a Norman name, possibly related to a word for hazel
Eibhlín is the Irish form of Norman Aveline, a Germanic diminutive whose root element avi- has no agreed meaning. It has often been treated as an Irish form of Helen, but the two are unrelated — that association came later, from the similarity of sound. A derivation from a word meaning hazel or light has been proposed for Aveline and is not established.

Pronouncing Aylene
ay-LEEN
Two syllables with the stress on the second. The ay spelling gives a long A at the front, where Eileen gives a long E — the two are genuinely different sounds, and this is one of the few respellings in the family that changes anything audible.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
