Where it comes from

The story of Aydan

Aidan of Lindisfarne founded the monastery there in 635 and converted much of Northumbria; Aiden rose extraordinarily in American naming from the 1990s and generated dozens of spellings. Separately, Aydan is a genuine Turkish name. Both routes brought this spelling to America, where it appears in the registers in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

little fiery one; from the moon

Two routes. Through Aidan and the Irish Aodhán, a diminutive of Aodh, 'fire' — a pre-Christian Irish deity name. Or the Turkish aydan, 'from the moon', from ay, 'moon'. Both are genuine and unrelated, and the American spelling does not distinguish them.

Aydan is past its biggest year. The count topped out at 454 boys in 2008 and has eased 81% since — the slow half of a naming cycle, where a name stays familiar while getting steadily less common. The move since 2024: down 19.8%.

#298
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aydan went to 85 boys in 2025, but Aidan is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 1,128, which makes it the 298th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,554 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,514 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 20,095 for Aydan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both routes are genuine — a pre-Christian Irish fire god and the Turkish moon.
  • Dan is available as a short form with an enormous record.
  • Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk.
What to consider
  • The two origins are entirely unrelated.
  • Aiden and Aidan are far commoner spellings.
  • In Turkish the name is used for both sexes.
