The story of Santo
Sanctus was a legal and religious word in Rome before it was a Christian one — a sanctioned law was one made binding. Italian and Spanish took it as santo, and southern Italian families in particular used it as a given name, often as a shortening of a fuller devotional phrase. It reached American records in numbers with Italian emigration in the early twentieth century and appears steadily since.
Meaning
holy, a saint
From Latin sanctus, the past participle of sancire, to consecrate or make binding; the same root gives sanction, sanctuary and sacred, and the sense is of something set apart by a formal act.

The Ennis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Santo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ennis climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ennis's path sketches the road Santo is walking now.
