Avelino
Masculine · “Latin Abella”
Avellino is a town in Campania, and its name comes from Abella, whose hazelnuts were famous enough that the Latin word for the nut, avellana, is named after the town. A saint took his surname from the place, and the surname became a first name. Three steps, all documented.

The story of Avelino
The chain runs in an unexpected direction. Abella was an Oscan settlement whose orchards were noted by Roman writers; Pliny records the nut as the Abellan nut, and the adjective avellana became the standard Latin word for hazel. So the tree is named after the town, not the other way round. The town's medieval form was Avellino. Lancellotto Avellino, a priest of the Theatine order, was canonized in 1712 as Andrew Avellino and became a widely venerated saint in Italy and Spain, particularly as a patron against sudden death. His surname entered Spanish and Portuguese naming as a given name in its own right, which is the usual route for a saint whose forename was too common to distinguish him. Every step of that sequence, from Oscan town to Spanish birth certificate, is on record.
Meaning
Latin Abella, from the town in Campania
Avelino comes from Avellino, a town in Campania, itself from the ancient Abella. The town's hazelnuts gave Latin nux avellana, the Abellan nut, which is the source of the botanical name Corylus avellana and of Spanish avellana, hazelnut. Andrew Avellino, born Lancellotto in 1521, took the surname from the region, and Spanish-speaking families took Avelino from him. The American peak is 1948.

The Quention test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Avelino's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Quention climbed just as high around 1919, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Quention's path sketches the road Avelino is walking now.
Avelino sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
