The story of Avante
Avant-garde is ordinary French military vocabulary: the vanguard, the part of an army that moves ahead of the rest. Its transfer to culture is datable. Olinde Rodrigues, a follower of Saint-Simon, published a dialogue in 1825 in which the artist is told that art is the avant-garde of society, going ahead of it to prepare the way, and the metaphor was meant seriously as a claim about the social function of artists. It spread through French radical and then artistic circles, reached English in the twentieth century, and by the 1950s was a label applied by critics rather than a claim made by the artists themselves. The military sense is still current in French, so a French speaker reading avant-garde in an art review hears something an English speaker does not.

Line the two peaks up, and Correy's path sketches the road Avante is walking now.
Avante sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
