Armonie
Feminine · “a fitting together”

Armonie is Harmony without its Greek breathing. Spanish and Italian dropped the initial h from harmonia centuries ago, giving armonia; French then supplied the -ie ending. The result is a spelling that looks invented and is in fact assembled from two genuine Romance treatments of the same Greek word. It appeared on American birth certificates in the early 2000s.

The story of Armonie
Latin took harmonia from Greek with its h intact, but spoken Latin lost the sound early, and by the time the Romance languages were written down the letter was doing nothing. Spanish and Italian dropped it from the spelling; French kept it silently in harmonie. English, which borrowed the word from French in the fourteenth century, kept both the letter and, eventually, the pronunciation. The given name Harmony is an English virtue-name development of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Armonie takes the Romance spelling of the stem and the French spelling of the ending, which is a combination no single language makes, and puts them on an American birth certificate.
Meaning
a fitting together; agreement of parts
Greek harmonia is built on harmos, 'a joint', and its first sense is carpentry rather than music: the fitting of one piece to another. From there it became agreement, then concord between people, then the musical sense. Harmonia was also a figure in Greek myth, daughter of Ares and Aphrodite and wife of Cadmus. The h at the front is a Greek rough breathing that Latin kept and the Romance languages eventually let go, which is why Spanish and Italian both write armonia.
