The story of Antwane
French naming in Louisiana outlasted French rule by a very long way. The Code Noir, promulgated in 1685 and applied in Louisiana from 1724, regulated slavery and also recognized manumission, and New Orleans developed a large free population of color, French-speaking, Catholic and legally distinct, which persisted through Spanish rule and into the American period. Its naming was French: Antoine, Etienne, Achille, Aristide, Numa, Valcour. Civil-law traditions of naming and inheritance survived alongside them. After the Civil War and through the twentieth century the French forms gradually gave way to English ones or to phonetic respellings, which is one of the routes by which Antwan, Antwane and Antwon entered the general American record. The name is French, the spelling is American, and the community that carried it between them was neither.
