Where it comes from

The story of Antonie

Leeuwenhoek learned lens-grinding in connection with the drapery trade, where a magnifier was used to count threads, and became extraordinarily good at it; his single-lens microscopes reached magnifications of several hundred times, well beyond what his contemporaries could manage, and he never revealed his method. From 1673 he sent letters to the Royal Society in London describing what he saw: protozoa in rainwater, bacteria from his own mouth, red blood cells, spermatozoa, the structure of muscle. The Society had them translated, since he wrote only in Dutch. He was elected a Fellow in 1680 and continued sending letters for fifty years. The point often missed is how far ahead of everyone he was: nobody saw bacteria again for well over a century, because nobody else could build the instrument.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Antonie is the Dutch and German form of Anthony, from the Roman clan name Antonius, whose meaning is genuinely unknown and is probably Etruscan. The h that English inserted in the Renaissance, on a false connection to Greek anthos, a flower, is absent from the Dutch form. The American peak is 1975.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tony and Ton are both established short forms.
  • It is the standard Dutch form of a very widespread name.
  • The absence of the h is historically more accurate.
What to consider
  • Anthony and Antonio are both commoner in American use.
  • It reads as female to Americans who see the -ie ending.
  • The meaning of the Roman original is genuinely unknown.
