Antione
Masculine · “Not established”
Antione is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 4,831 boys against 49 girls since 1880.
Antione is Antoine with two letters swapped, and the swap is easy to make because the French rule underneath is invisible to English readers. In French, oi is not two vowels but a single sound, wa — which is why memoir, reservoir and coiffure all say it, and why Antoine is an-TWAHN.

The story of Antione
English borrowed the French oi spelling wholesale along with the words that carry it, and it is one of the most reliable French rules operating inside English: memoir, reservoir, repertoire, coiffure, patois, bourgeois. The rule only holds where the word is felt to be French, which is why English readers say boil and coin with a different sound entirely. Antoine sits on the French side of that line, and the spelling Antione appears when the name is written by ear rather than copied — the sound gives no clue which order the vowels go in, because neither of them is pronounced separately. The American figures peak in 1974.
Meaningnot established
Not established — a Roman family name of probably Etruscan origin
Antoine is the French form of Latin Antonius, a Roman gens name with no secure etymology and probable Etruscan roots. The readings commonly given — priceless, praiseworthy, flower — are all later inventions; flower in particular comes from the Renaissance misspelling with th, from Greek anthos. Antione is a spelling variant of Antoine and shares its history exactly.

Antione's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Delton climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Delton's path sketches the road Antione is walking now.
