Our story of Delton
The -ton ending has been available to American naming for a very long time and it works differently in different decades. In the nineteenth century it arrived through genuine surnames — Milton, Clayton, Newton, Dalton. In the early twentieth it began detaching, and Delton, Marlton and Verlton appear alongside them with no clear surname behind them. And by the 2000s it was fully free, producing Braxton, Kingston, Bryston and Jaxton. Delton sits in the middle stage: it has a plausible surname parent in Dalton and a plausible formation on Del-, and its 1933 peak places it in the decade when both explanations were equally available.

The farmstead in the dell
The surname is generally derived from Old English dell, a small valley, and tūn, a farmstead or settlement, or from Dalton, from dæl, a dale, with the same ending. The two are closely related and are not always distinguishable. As an American given name Delton may equally be a formation on Del- and -ton, both of which were productive in the early twentieth century.

Delton's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Thurston climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Thurston's path sketches the road Delton is walking now.
