The story of Annalea
German-speaking Europe made the double name a formal institution: Anneliese, Annemarie, Annekathrin and Marielies are single legal names, not two names side by side, and they came to America with nineteenth-century German migration. English-speaking America already had its own habit of running two short names together in speech, and the two traditions reinforced each other. The result was a great flowering of Anna- compounds on American birth certificates between about 1890 and 1930: Annabell, Annamae, Annalee, Annalou, Annalea. Most faded after the 1940s along with the whole double-name fashion, and several have returned since 2000 in the general revival of early-century names.
Meaning
'grace' joined to Leah
Anna is the Greek and Latin form of Hebrew Hannah, from a root meaning grace or favor, and it is one of the most stable names in the Western world. Lea or Leah is the elder sister of Rachel in Genesis; her name is traditionally read as 'weary', though a competing derivation from an Akkadian word for wild cow is taken seriously by scholars. The compound simply carries both, in the way that Annamarie carries Anna and Marie.

About 1 girl in 9,030 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 76,537 for Annalea itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
