The story of Andru
Two of the twelve apostles carry purely Greek names with no Semitic form attested: Andrew and Philip, both from Bethsaida in Galilee. Several others carry Greek renderings of Hebrew or Aramaic names, and Simon has both, being called Simon and Simeon in different places. The pattern tells you something. Galilee in the first century was ringed by Greek cities, its administration and much of its trade ran in Greek, and Greek names were ordinary among Jews there, in the same way that Greek names were ordinary among Jews in Alexandria and Antioch. The Gospels record this without comment, including the moment in John where some Greeks approach Philip, the disciple with the Greek name, when they want to see Jesus. Andrew's later cult carried the name to Scotland, Russia and Greece, all three of which claim him as patron.
