The story of Andria
Publius Terentius Afer came to Rome as a slave, probably from the province of Africa, was educated by his owner and freed, and wrote six comedies before disappearing on a voyage to Greece at about twenty-five. All six survive complete, which is exceptional: for most ancient dramatists we have fragments. His Latin is plainer and more natural than Plautus's, which is why it became a school text, and phrases from him entered the language: nothing human is alien to me, and fortune favors the brave, are both his. The Andria adapts two Greek originals by Menander, whose own plays were almost entirely lost until papyri began turning up in Egypt in the twentieth century. So a freed African slave's Latin versions preserved the shape of Greek comedy for two thousand years while the Greek itself disappeared.

The Fran test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Andria's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Fran climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Fran's path sketches the road Andria is walking now.
