The story of Anastacio
Western art shows the resurrection as Christ rising from or standing beside an open tomb. The Byzantine tradition shows something else entirely. In the Anastasis, Christ stands on the shattered doors of Hades, which lie crossed beneath his feet with their broken locks and nails scattered, and reaches down to seize Adam and Eve by the wrist, not the hand, because they are being pulled rather than helped. Behind them stand the kings and prophets. The image illustrates the Harrowing of Hell, the descent between the crucifixion and the resurrection, and it is what an Orthodox church displays at Easter. Theologically it makes a different point from the Western scene: not that Christ is alive, but that he has emptied the place of the dead, and the gesture at the wrist says that the rescue is not being negotiated.
