Americo
Masculine · “Germanic haim and ric”
Two continents are named after one man's first name, and it is the only case. Amerigo Vespucci's given name became America because a German mapmaker in 1507 chose to Latinize it. The name itself is not Italian in origin at all: it is Germanic, brought to Italy by the Lombards.

The story of Americo
Waldseemuller's map of 1507 named the new southern landmass America, in a companion volume explaining that it was named for Amerigo Vespucci, who had argued that it was a new continent rather than Asia. He used the first name because the convention required a feminine Latin form to match Europa, Asia and Africa, and Americus gave America. Waldseemuller later dropped the name from his 1513 map, but it had spread and could not be recalled. No other continent, and no other landmass of any size, is named for a person's first name. The underlying name is Germanic, so America is, at the end of the chain, the same word as Henry.
Meaning
Germanic haim and ric, home ruler
Americo is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Italian Amerigo, from Germanic Haimirich or Emmerich, joining haim, home, to ric, power or rule. It is the same compound that gives German Heinrich and English Henry, arriving in Italy through Lombard rather than Frankish channels. Martin Waldseemuller Latinized Amerigo as America on his 1507 world map, and the continents took the name. The American peak of the given name is 1917.

The Audrey test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Americo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Audrey climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Audrey's path sketches the road Americo is walking now.
