Where it comes from

Our story of Amairany

Ours, offered as ours. Mexican naming produced an extraordinary number of new women's names in the 1980s and 1990s, many of them ending in -any, -eny or -ani: Amairany, Anahí, Yatziri, Itzayana. Several were popularized by telenovelas, which functioned as a national naming catalog for a generation. That is a real and traceable mechanism, and it accounts for far more of these names than the Nahuatl attributions that circulate.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source language or meaning is documented. Attributions to Nahuatl and to Greek circulate in name lists without support. The construction — an open Ama- opening and a -rany ending — is characteristic of Mexican naming of the 1980s and 1990s.

Amairany sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2017, with 65 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amairany went to 34 girls in 2025, but Amairani and Amayrani are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 108, which makes it the 852nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,320 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 14,882 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 47,273 for Amairany itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every letter is sounded, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at first sight.
  • Rani and Mai are both usable short forms with lives of their own.
  • It belongs clearly to a living Mexican naming tradition.
What to consider
  • Eight letters and four syllables is a great deal for American forms.
  • Amairany, Amairani and Amayrani are all in use and none is dominant.
  • The meanings circulated in name lists are not supported.
