Where it comes from

The story of Asusena

The Spanish word for the white lily is a loan from Arabic, taken during the eight centuries when much of the peninsula spoke it, and the Arabic word belongs to a family that runs across the whole ancient Near East — the same root that gives Hebrew its word for a lily, and behind that, quite probably, an Egyptian word for a lotus. Spanish took several hundred plant words the same way, along with the irrigation vocabulary that made the gardens possible: acequia, alberca, noria, azahar. The z in the standard spelling is said as an s across Latin America and in southern Spain, so the respelling here records an ordinary pronunciation rather than a mistake. The flower it names is not a European plant, which is worth knowing given how much European religious painting it appears in.

Meaning

Madonna lily

The Spanish word names the tall white lily of religious painting. It came into Spanish from Arabic, and the Arabic word is a relative of the Hebrew one that gave Europe the name Susanna — so the flower name and that name are cousins arriving by different roads.

Fashion outlook

Asusena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every syllable is open, which makes it easy to say in Spanish or English.
  • The meaning is a real flower with a documented and interesting descent.
  • Susi detaches cleanly and is used across the Spanish-speaking world.
What to consider
  • Azucena is the standard Spanish spelling and will be written for it.
  • Four syllables is long for forms designed around shorter names.
  • The s spelling will look like an error to readers from central and northern Spain.
