Allisyn
Feminine · “Germanic adal and heid”
There is no son in Alison. The name is Alice with the Old French diminutive -on, so it means little Alice, and the -son ending American readers see is not there. Allisyn respells it to remove a morpheme the name never had, which is a hypercorrection against a misreading.

Our story of Allisyn
Our reading is that Allisyn is a good place to end an account of American respelling, because it shows the system operating on its own assumptions rather than on the language. The -syn ending has a real job: Madison and Addison and Harrison do contain the word son, and parents naming daughters have used -syn to take it out. That is a coherent response to a real feature. Applied to Alison it is not, because Alison's ending is a French diminutive that happens to be spelled the same way. The device has been generalized from the cases where it works to a case where there is nothing to fix. This is exactly how language change proceeds: a pattern is extracted from examples, applied by analogy, and over-applied, and the over-application is what tells you the pattern has become a rule rather than a set of memorised cases.
Meaning
Germanic adal and heid, noble and kind
Alison is Alice with the Old French diminutive suffix -on, giving little Alice. Alice descends from Germanic Adalheidis, from adal, noble, and heid, kind or sort. The name contains no patronymic element. Allisyn respells the ending as -syn, the device used on Madisyn and Adisyn to remove a visible son, which in this case removes nothing. It peaks in 2011.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
