Alli
Feminine
Alli is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 3,805 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Alli is spoken far more often than the records suggest, and the reason is arithmetic. Ally, Allie, Alli and Aly are four separate rows in the data and one identical sound in the world, and most of the people who answer to it were registered as Allison, Alexandra or Alexis and never as this at all.

Our story of Alli
A nickname becomes a name in two stages. First it detaches: enough people are called Alli every day that the long form starts to feel ceremonial, something for the doctor's office. Then it registers: a family decides not to bother with the ceremony and writes the short form on the certificate, and from that moment the child has no formal name held in reserve. American records show this happening steadily since the 1980s across the whole Al- family, and Alli reached its best year in 2011. The interesting consequence is invisible in the numbers: because the sound is split across four spellings and shared with three long names, the true population who answer to it is several times larger than any one row shows, and no chart on this site can capture it.
Meaningnot established
depends on the full name it shortens
As a short form Alli inherits whatever it is cut from: Allison, from a medieval French pet form of Alice and ultimately Germanic adalheidis, noble kind; Alexandra, Greek for defender of men; Alexis, Greek for helper; or Alice itself. Registered on its own it carries no independent etymology. Any single meaning offered for the four letters belongs to a parent name, not to this one.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alli went to 18 girls in 2025, but Ally, Ali and Aly are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 190, which makes it the 770th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,555 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 8,459 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,293 for Alli itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Heide test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alli's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Heide climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Heide's path sketches the road Alli is walking now.
Alli sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
