Where it comes from

The story of Heide

The same four letters are an ordinary German word with two senses that are the same fact seen twice. Heide means a heath — open uncultivated country — and it also means a heathen. The connection is not a coincidence or a slur; it is a description of where the old religion survived longest. Christianity moved through the towns and along the roads and reached the open country last, so the people out on the heath were the ones who had not converted yet. Latin did exactly the same thing: pagan comes from the word for a country district. Two languages, independently, named unbelief after the place it was still living.

Meaning

of a noble sort

The full name joins an element meaning noble to one meaning kind or appearance. Only the second element survives in this short form, so the noble half is gone and what remains means something closer to sort or type.

Fashion outlook

Heide sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a real German name and word rather than a respelling.
  • The sound is soft and every part of it is easy for English speakers.
  • It connects to a much larger and older name without carrying its length.
What to consider
  • Heidi is far commoner and this spelling gets corrected constantly.
  • The final e is said two different ways depending on which side of the Atlantic.
  • The name is closely tied to one very famous children's book.
