Heather
Feminine · “the heather plant”
Heather is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 525,910 girls against 1,477 boys since 1880. See Heather as a boy name
Heather has a letter in it that was not there originally. The Middle English word for the plant was spelled without the th, and the modern form is the result of somebody assuming a connection to the word heath and adjusting the spelling to match. The connection may even be right, but the letter arrived by assumption rather than by descent.

Where it comes from
From A Middle English word for the moorland shrub to Heather
The story of Heather
White heather is sold as lucky throughout Scotland and the trade rests on a story. The usual version involves a Highland girl whose lover was killed, whose tears fell on the heather and turned it white, and whose blessing on it makes it lucky for others; there are several variants and none of them is older than the nineteenth century. What is true is that white heather is genuinely rare in the wild, a straightforward color mutation appearing perhaps once in a large stand, and that scarcity is enough on its own to make something lucky. Queen Victoria's enthusiasm for the Highlands turned the association into a commercial one, and sprigs have been sold at Scottish weddings ever since, most of them cultivated rather than found.
Meaning
the heather plant
The English word for the low shrub that covers moorland across northern Britain, used directly as a name from the nineteenth century. The reading is not in dispute. The word's own history is less tidy than it looks: the older form lacked the th, and the modern spelling reflects an association with heath that may or may not be the actual source.
How the name formed
- A Middle English word for the moorland shrub
- Respelled by association with the word heath
- Taken as a personal name in the nineteenth century
- Very widely used in America in the later twentieth
Pronouncing Heather
HETH-er
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the voiced th of this rather than the voiceless one of thin. That is the reverse of what the spelling suggests to somebody guessing, and it matches the word heath, which is where the letter came from.
