Zoie is the Greek word for life, respelled with the soft -ie ending that English already gives Sophie, Josie and Katie. The root behind it has been in continuous use since antiquity — the Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible used Zoe to render the name of Eve — and it reached American birth records early in the twentieth century in this exact form. Two syllables, no consonant clusters, and it ends on a bright vowel.

Where it comes from

The story of Zoie

Zoe began as an ordinary Greek noun and became a name among Greek-speaking Christians in the early centuries of the common era, chosen partly because the Greek translators of the Hebrew scriptures had rendered Eve — 'living one' — as Zoe. It stayed alive in the Byzantine world, where it was borne by empresses in the eleventh century, and reached English-speaking countries in the nineteenth. Zoie is the American respelling, swapping the bare -e for the -ie familiar from Sophie and Josie, and it has been appearing in US records since the early twentieth century. It rose alongside Zoe and Zoey and is now stepping gently back from its high point.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is short, settled and easy to explain: 'life' in Greek, unchanged for well over two thousand years.
  • Two syllables and no difficult consonants — easy to say, easy for a young child to write.
  • The -ie ending is already familiar in English from Sophie, Josie and Katie, so the spelling reads naturally.
  • The underlying name travels: Zoé in French, Zoë in German and Dutch, Zoya in Russian, Ζωή in Greek.
What to consider
  • Zoe is the dominant spelling and Zoey is close behind, so this version will be re-spelled by other people fairly often. Most Zoies end up spelling it out at appointments and on forms for life.
  • The spelling is uncommon, but the sound is not — a Zoie may well share a classroom with a Zoe or a Zoey and be distinguished only on paper.
  • The -oie combination invites a first guess of 'zoy' from readers who have not met the name. It corrects easily, but the correction does have to be made.
