Areli
Feminine · Hebrew roots · “Not settled”
Areli is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 6,624 girls against 115 boys since 1880.
Areli is a name that arrives in the United States by two roads at once. One begins in the Hebrew Bible, where Areli is listed among the sons of Gad; the other runs through Spanish, where Araceli and Aracely have long been shortened to Arely and Areli. Three syllables, every one of them open, and it lands softly in either language.

The story of Areli
The oldest trace is textual: Areli appears in the genealogies of the Hebrew Bible as a son of Gad, and the clan descended from him is named after him — a man's name, in that setting, and one that stayed in the text rather than in wide use. The name's life in the Americas is a separate story. Araceli, honoring the Roman church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli, became a well-established Spanish women's name, and its clipped forms Arely and Areli circulate widely in Mexico and among Mexican-American families. That is the current the American Areli rides: US records list it as a girl's name, and its strength in California, Texas and Arizona follows the same map.
Meaningscholars disagree
Not settled — read either as Hebrew "lion of God" or "heroic", or as a short form of Spanish Araceli, "altar of heaven"
The biblical Areli (Genesis and Numbers, ancestor of the Arelites) is Hebrew, and commentators have long split between reading it as ari + El, "lion of God", and glossing it simply as "heroic" or "valiant" — neither reading is agreed. Separately, in Spanish-speaking usage Areli sits alongside Arely as a shortening of Araceli, from the Latin ara caeli, "altar of heaven", a title of the Virgin Mary. Which meaning belongs to a given Areli depends on which road the family came by.

ah-REH-lee
That is the Spanish reading, with the stress in the middle. English speakers often say uh-REL-ee, and both are heard in the US. Occasionally someone tries AR-uh-lee, which is worth correcting early.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Latesha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Areli's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Latesha climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Latesha's path sketches the road Areli is walking now.
Areli is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds in Spanish, and short enough that English speakers get it on a second hearing.
- Works in both Spanish and English without changing form — no accent to drop, no letter to swap.
- Has an established short form in Ari, which is already familiar on its own.
- Documented in the Hebrew Bible, so the spelling has a long textual record behind it.
- Rare enough in American classrooms that it will rarely need a last initial.
- Arely, Aracely and Araceli all live in the same neighborhood, so the spelling will need repeating on forms — a lifelong small tax rather than a real problem.
- Stress moves between Spanish and English speakers, and the name may come back as uh-REL-ee in places where Spanish is not the default.
- In the Bible, Areli is a man; in US records it is a girl's name. The two almost never collide in practice, but someone who knows the Genesis passage may remark on it.
- Ari, the natural nickname, is shared with Ariana, Aria, Ariel and Arianna, so a shortened Areli may be less distinctive than the full name.
