The story of Alix
Adelaide of Italy, the tenth-century empress, carried the full Germanic name; Old French wore it down within two centuries. Alix of France, daughter of Louis VII, and Alix of Vergy, duchess of Burgundy, are twelfth- and thirteenth-century bearers, and the spelling was ordinary in medieval France. It survived there while English standardized on Alice. Its American record is thin and modern: Alix appears in small numbers through the twentieth century and peaks in the early 1990s, used by families who wanted Alice without Alice's Victorian weight, and it is occasionally given to boys as a short form of Alexander, which the spelling invites.
Meaning
Noble kind, of noble sort
From the Germanic Adalheidis, from adal, noble, and heid, kind or sort — the same name that gives Adelaide. Old French shortened it to Aaliz, Aliz and Alix; English took Alice from the same source. The reading is settled and both elements are transparent.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Lashawnda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alix's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lashawnda climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lashawnda's path sketches the road Alix is walking now.

The trade-off
- The Germanic meaning is settled and flattering.
- It is a genuine medieval French spelling, not a modern respelling.
- Ali works as a short form and is currently very popular.
- The x makes it look like a short form of Alexandra or Alexander, and it will be read as unisex.
- French and English put the stress in different places.
- Alice, Alix and Alyx will all be written for each other.
