Alix is the medieval French spelling of Alice, and the x is not decoration — it is a scribal abbreviation. Medieval French scribes wrote a terminal x for the letters -us or -is, so Alix stands for Alis, which is what Alice was before English added the e. The letter is a piece of surviving shorthand.

Where it comes from

The story of Alix

The terminal x abbreviation appears throughout medieval French manuscripts — Alix for Alis, Beatrix, Felix — and survived into fixed spellings after the shorthand itself was forgotten. Alix was borne by several medieval French noblewomen, including Alix de France, daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine. In modern France it is used for both sexes, more often female; in America it appears in both columns, and the male entries peaking in 1993 are generally read as a variant of Alex rather than of Alice, which is a mistake with a long life.

Meaning

Germanic "noble kind"

From Adelheidis — adal, noble, and heid, a sort or kind — through Old French Adelais and Alis. The erosion from five syllables to two is well documented. Alix and Alice are the same name; only the scribal ending differs. It is unrelated to Alex, which is a clipping of Alexander and comes from Greek.

Alix sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 43 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented medieval French history and a real scribal explanation for its spelling.
  • It is short, four letters, and distinctive on a page.
  • It works for both sexes, as it historically has.
What to consider
  • It will be read as a variant of Alex, which is a different name entirely.
  • In France it skews female, which American usage does not match.
  • The x makes the spelling look modern when it is in fact medieval.
