Where it comes from

The story of Alissia

The Liddells were the family of the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, and Dodgson, a mathematics lecturer there, knew the children well. The story was told on 4 July 1862 during a rowing trip to Godstow with Alice, her two sisters and another colleague. Alice asked for it in writing, he produced a manuscript with his own illustrations as a Christmas present in 1864, and an expanded version was published in 1865 under the name Lewis Carroll. The book was an immediate success and has never been out of print. Alice was the fourth most popular girls' name in England and Wales in the 1870s and stayed high for decades, and the association with the book has kept it legible ever since. The name's own etymology, noble kind, is entirely unconnected to any of this.

Meaning

Germanic adal and heid, noble and kind

Alice descends from the Germanic Adalheidis, from adal, noble, and heid, kind or sort, through Old French Aalis. The same source gives Adelaide, so Alice and Adelaide are the same name in two degrees of contraction. Alissia is a modern respelling of Alicia, the Latinized form. It peaks in the American data in 1998.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alissia went to 11 girls in 2025, but Alyssia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 41, which makes it the 919th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,941 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 39,202 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Alissia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
