Our story of Alyssia
Ours, offered as ours. Greek lyssa is rage and specifically the madness of a rabid animal, and the plant alyssum was named for the belief that it worked against it — so the flower's name is a medical claim. It was hung in doorways and given to cattle. The claim was wrong, but the name outlasted the medicine by two thousand years and is now given to children who will never hear the reason.
Meaningscholars disagree
without madness; or noble
Alyssum is Greek a-, not, and lyssa, rabies or frenzy — the plant was believed to treat the bite. Alicia descends separately from Germanic adal, noble, through Adelaide. This spelling sits between the two and neither is established.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alyssia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Pepper climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- Aly and Sia are both complete names in current use as short forms.
- A genuinely odd and memorable piece of botanical history behind one reading.
- Two large name families feed into it.
- Alyssa and Alicia are both far more common and will be assumed.
- The pronunciation is genuinely unsettled between two readings.
- Seven letters and four syllables is a lot for early handwriting.
