Aleem
Masculine · “Arabic alim”
There are two ways to write Arabic long vowels in English, and they were invented in different empires. The British in India used doubled letters and a heavy e: Aleem, Naseem, Kareem, Saleem. Orientalists working on the Levant used single letters with marks: Alim, Nasim, Karim, Salim. The spelling tells you which route a family took, not how the name is said.

The story of Aleem
Romanisation of Arabic and Urdu was standardized twice, and the two standards never merged. The Indian system, developed for administrative and educational use in British India, wrote long vowels by doubling or by adding an e, on the reasoning that English readers would lengthen them: hence Aleem, Naseem, Muneer, Aziz. The academic system used in European Arabic studies wrote them with a macron over a single letter, and when the macron is dropped in ordinary printing you are left with Alim, Nasim, Munir. Both are consistent; neither is more correct. The practical consequence for a family in the United States is that the same name will appear in reference works under a spelling they do not use, and that relatives from different countries may spell it differently while pronouncing it identically. Aleem peaks in the American data in 1985.
Meaning
Arabic alim, knowing or learned
From the Arabic root a-l-m, knowledge, giving ilm, knowledge, alim, one who knows, and ulama, the scholars, which is the plural. Al-Alim, the All-Knowing, is one of the ninety-nine names of God. Aleem and Alim are the same name, and the difference is entirely a matter of which romanisation convention a family inherited.

ah-LEEM
Two syllables, stress on the second, with a long second vowel. The initial letter is the Arabic ayn, a pharyngeal consonant English has no equivalent for and simply omits, so the English pronunciation begins with a plain vowel.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Pharoah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aleem's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Pharoah climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Pharoah's path sketches the road Aleem is walking now.
Aleem sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
