Where it comes from

The story of Aldric

Aldricus was a Frankish name and belonged to a ninth-century bishop of Le Mans who was a counselor to Louis the Pious and is venerated as a saint. The name generated the English surname Aldrich and the French Audric, and largely disappeared as a first name after the Middle Ages. Its small American record is modern and scattered, with a peak in the 1960s, and it is also used in the Philippines, where Spanish and American naming mixed and produced an appetite for uncommon European names that the rest of the English-speaking world had let go.

Meaning

Old ruler; ruler of long standing

From the Germanic Aldric or Aldaric, from ald, old, and rīk, ruler or power. The reading is settled and both elements are transparent; the same rīk appears in Frederick, Roderick, Richard and Ulrich, and the same ald in Aldous and Aldo. Old French made it Audry and English produced the surname Aldrich.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Germanic elements are documented and the meaning is clear.
  • Rick is available as an entirely ordinary short form.
  • It is uncommon without being unpronounceable.
What to consider
  • Aldrich is the commoner surname spelling and will be written for it.
  • It has been rare for eight hundred years and will be unfamiliar.
  • The consonant cluster in the middle is blunt beside most current names.
