Aime is Aimée with its accent lost, and in French that loss changes the grammar. Aimé is the masculine past participle of aimer, to love — beloved, said of a man. Aimée is the feminine. Dropping the accent and the second e leaves a form that French would read as masculine, which is not what any American family intends.

Where it comes from

The story of Aime

Amy is the older English form — it entered Middle English from Old French Amee and has been in use since the thirteenth century. Aimée is the modern French spelling and re-entered American use in the twentieth century as a separate name, peaking in the 1970s. Accents are stripped by most American record systems, so Aimée becomes Aimee and then Aime, and each stage loses information: the accent marked the stress, and the second e marked the sex. The 1994 peak belongs to the most reduced form.

Meaning

French "beloved"

From the past participle of aimer, to love, from Latin amare. Aimée is the feminine form. The name passed into English as Amy in the Middle Ages, which is why Amy and Aimee are the same name at different stages. The etymology is entirely settled; only the spelling is unstable.

ay-MAY

Two syllables with the stress on the second in French. Americans usually say AY-mee, which turns it into Amy and moves the stress. Without the accent the spelling gives no instruction at all, so both are common.

Aime sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 123 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aime went to 15 girls in 2025, but Aimee and Aymee are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 154, which makes it the 806th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,327 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 10,437 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Aime itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
