Agustina is the Spanish feminine of Agustín, and it carries a national heroine: Agustina de Aragon, who in 1808 fired a cannon at the French at the walls of Zaragoza and became the most famous woman in Spanish military memory. The Spanish spelling drops the u after the g that Latin Augustinus had, because Spanish spells the sound as it says it. Its American peak is 1931.

Where it comes from

The story of Agustina

Augustine of Hippo, who died in 430, put the name into permanent European circulation, and the Augustinian orders kept it there through the Middle Ages. Spanish naming took it up thoroughly. Agustina de Aragon, born Agustina Raimunda Maria Saragossa i Domenech, became a symbol of Spanish resistance during the Peninsular War and was painted by Goya; her fame made the name a patriotic choice in Spain and later in Argentina, where it is still common. American records show Agustina rising with Spanish-speaking migration in the early twentieth century, peaking in 1931 and continuing at low levels since.

Meaning

venerable, consecrated

Latin augustus means venerable, majestic and consecrated by augury; it was awarded as a title to Octavian in 27 BC and became the imperial name. Augustinus is a diminutive-flavored derivative of it, and it is the name of Augustine of Hippo, the most influential Latin theologian of late antiquity. Spanish Agustin and its feminine Agustina descend directly. The u dropped out of the Spanish spelling because gu before i would be read with a silent u, which is not what the word needs.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Agus and Tina are both established short forms with different registers.
  • The meaning is settled and connects to one of the best-known names in Western history.
  • The spelling is fully phonetic in Spanish and needs no accents in English systems.
What to consider
  • English speakers will add the u and write Augustina.
  • Four syllables is long for everyday use, so a short form is effectively required.
  • It is often assumed to be a variant of Augusta, which is a different name.
