Nicolina
Feminine · “victory of the people”
Nicolina is a double diminutive. Italian took Nicola, made Nicoletta and Nicolina from it with two different affectionate endings, and treated the results as full names. That layering — a diminutive of a diminutive — is characteristic of Italian naming, and its American peak is 1911, with the great Italian arrival.

The story of Nicolina
Saint Nicholas of Myra is one of the most widely venerated saints in Christendom and the patron of sailors, merchants, pawnbrokers and children. Italian naming took him up thoroughly, and southern Italy in particular — Bari holds his relics, taken there by merchants in 1087, and the basilica built for them is a major pilgrimage site. That local connection is why Nicola and its feminines are so common in Puglia and Calabria, and why they arrived in America in numbers with the southern Italian migration of 1890 to 1920. The American record peaks in 1911 with the rest of that cohort.
Meaning
victory of the people
Greek Nikolaos joins nike, 'victory', to laos, 'the people'. Italian Nicola is the masculine form — confusingly for English speakers, since Nicola is feminine in Britain — and Nicolina and Nicoletta are its feminines, formed with the diminutive endings -ina and -etta. Those endings are grammatically diminutive but not childish in Italian; they are ordinary name-forming suffixes. The derivation is settled at every step.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
