The story of Agostino
Augustine wrote the Confessions around 397, some ten years after his conversion, and nothing quite like it had been written before. Ancient lives were external: deeds, offices, campaigns. Augustine wrote about what it was like to be himself, in the second person to God, and he spent his attention on the things that are hardest to describe. Book Two is about stealing pears from a neighbor's tree as a teenager, an act he keeps returning to precisely because there was no motive: he did not want the pears, he threw them to pigs, and the pointlessness is the subject. Book Eleven is a sustained argument about the nature of time that philosophers still quote. The form he invented, the interior account of a life told as a search, runs through Rousseau, Wordsworth and most of what has been written since.
Meaning
Latin augustus, venerable
Agostino is the Italian form of Augustinus, a derived form of Augustus, venerable or majestic, from a root meaning to increase. Augustus was the title granted to Octavian in 27 BC and later borne by all Roman emperors. The name reached general use through Augustine of Hippo and Augustine of Canterbury. The American peak is 1912.
