The Arabic word for mercy is built on the word for womb. The root r-h-m gives rahim, a womb, and rahma, mercy, and the two most repeated divine names in Islam, al-Rahman and al-Rahim, come from it. Every chapter of the Quran but one opens by invoking that root twice.

Where it comes from

The story of Abdelrahman

The basmala, the phrase that opens the Quran and almost every chapter of it, invokes God as al-Rahman and al-Rahim in the same breath, and commentators have spent fourteen centuries distinguishing them. The usual reading is that rahman is the intensive form, describing an overwhelming and universal mercy extended to all creation, while rahim is the continuing form, describing mercy sustained toward the faithful. Both come from the same three consonants that give the word for a womb, and Arabic writers have long drawn the connection: the mercy meant is the kind a mother has for what she carried. Al-Rahman is also the title of the fifty-fifth chapter. Because it is a divine name, it is not given bare to a man: the form is Abd al-Rahman, servant of the Merciful, and the whole phrase functions as one name.

Meaning

Arabic Abd al-Rahman, servant of the Merciful

From abd, a servant or slave, and al-Rahman, the Most Merciful, one of the two divine names in the opening formula of the Quran. The root r-h-m also gives rahim, the womb, and the connection between the two senses is explicit in Arabic lexicography. The compound is written as one word in many transliterations, and Abdelrahman is the Egyptian and Levantine spelling. It peaks in the American data in 2001.

The trade-off

  • Abdo gives a warm and short familiar form.
What to consider
  • Western records regularly split it into two names, which breaks the phrase.
  • At least six romanisations are in common use.
  • Four syllables and eleven letters is long for American forms.
