Abbey
Feminine · “my father is joy”
Abbey is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 17,509 girls against 35 boys since 1880.
Abbey is the short form of Abigail that also happens to be an ordinary English noun, which is unusual and gives the name a second life it did not ask for. It sat just inside the American top four hundred at the end of the 1990s, at the height of the Abby, Abbie and Abbey era, and the -ey spelling is the one that doubles as the building.

The story of Abbey
Abigail entered English use with the Reformation and the general Protestant turn to Old Testament names. It then acquired an odd second career: Abigail in Beaumont and Fletcher's 1616 play The Scornful Lady is a lady's maid, and for two centuries afterwards 'an abigail' was English for a waiting-woman, which suppressed the name badly. It recovered in America in the twentieth century and rose steeply from the 1970s, reaching the top ten by 2001. The short forms rose with it, dividing between Abby, Abbie and Abbey, with Abby always the largest share and Abbey the spelling that carries the accidental echo of the building.
Meaning
my father is joy
The meaning belongs to Abigail — Hebrew Avigayil, from av, 'father', and a root for joy or rejoicing. Abigail is a substantial figure in the First Book of Samuel: the wife of Nabal who intervenes with David and later marries him, and one of the few women in the Hebrew Bible given a speech of her own. The English word abbey, from Latin abbatia and ultimately Aramaic abba, 'father', is a coincidence of spelling — though it is a coincidence that puts the same Semitic word for father at both ends.

The Kecia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Abbey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kecia climbed just as high around 1965, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kecia's path sketches the road Abbey is walking now.
Abbey sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Everyone can say it and nobody has to learn it, because it is already an English word.
- It carries a settled biblical meaning through Abigail without requiring the long name.
- It reads as friendly and informal without being childish on an adult.
- Abby, Abbie and Abbey are all common and hers will be spelled wrong routinely.
- It is an ordinary noun, so it appears in sentences that have nothing to do with the bearer.
- As a short form on a birth certificate it leaves no formal name in reserve.
