Where it comes from

The story of Zofia

Justinian's great church in Constantinople is dedicated to Holy Wisdom, not to any Saint Sophia, and the personification came later. Poland made Zofia, which has been among its most-used girls' names for centuries. It appears in American records in current use.

Meaning

wisdom

From the Greek sophia, 'wisdom', an ordinary abstract noun. Hagia Sophia means 'holy wisdom' and names an attribute of God rather than a person. Philosophy is 'love of wisdom' from the same root. Zofia is the standard Polish spelling. The Greek is undisputed.

Zofia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2011, with 102 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Zofia went to 86 girls in 2025, but Zophia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 104, which makes it the 856th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,297 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 15,454 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 18,689 for Zofia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The wisdom meaning is transparent and about as good as meanings get.
  • Zosia is a warm and very widely used Polish short form.
  • That the Hagia Sophia names an idea rather than a person is a first-rate fact.
What to consider
  • Sophia is what English speakers will assume.
  • English speakers add a syllable, saying zo-FEE-uh.
  • It reads as specifically Polish.
