Where it comes from

The story of Mayra

Myra was coined by an English poet around 1580 and has no ancient history; Mireia comes from Mistral's 1859 Provençal epic Mirèio and became a Catalan and Spanish name from there. Mayra appears in Spanish-speaking use in the twentieth century, drawing on one or both, and entered American records through Hispanic families, rising through the 1970s and peaking in the early 1990s.

Not established

No settled origin. It is read as a Spanish form of Myra, which the poet Fulke Greville coined in the sixteenth century; as a form of the Greek Moira, 'fate'; and as a variant of the Catalan Mireia, from a Provençal poem. None is documented as the source of the Spanish name.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mayra went to 86 girls in 2025, but Maira is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 148, which makes it the 812th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,341 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 10,860 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 18,689 for Mayra itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two soft syllables that work equally well in Spanish and English mouths.
  • It is uncommon in English-speaking use without being unfamiliar.
  • May is available as a short form with an independent record.
What to consider
  • The origin is genuinely unsettled among three unrelated candidates.
  • The English and Spanish pronunciations differ in the first vowel.
  • It is closely dated to the 1980s and 1990s in American records.
