The story of Jackie
Jacques is the French form of James, and Jacqueline its medieval feminine — a name of the French and Burgundian nobility. English-speaking countries borrowed it in the twentieth century, and its short form Jackie was registered outright for daughters from the 1920s. Feminine Jackie peaked in the mid-1950s, running alongside a masculine use from a completely different parent.
Meaning
heel-holder, supplanter
Through Jacqueline and Jacques, from the Latin Iacomus and so from the Hebrew Ya'aqov. Genesis explains it by the birth of twins, the younger gripping the elder's heel. French added -line to Jacques to make the feminine, and English shortened that to Jackie.

The Muriel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jackie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Muriel climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Muriel's path sketches the road Jackie is walking now.
