Zoa
Feminine · “living things”
Zoa is grammatically plural. Greek zoon is a living thing and zoa is more than one of them, which is why the ending turns up at the back of Protozoa and Metazoa in biology. As a name it is a Victorian variant of Zoe, and nobody who used it seems to have noticed that it says lives rather than life.

The story of Zoa
Zoe reached English through the Greek-speaking Christian east, where it was a translation-name: Jewish women called Eva were sometimes recorded as Zoe, because Hebrew Chavah and Greek zoe both mean life. The variant spellings multiply in nineteenth-century America, where names were often written from the sound with no reference book at hand, and Zoa, Zoah and Zoia all appear alongside it. Zoa's best year on record is 1884, at the very start of American registration, and it had effectively vanished by the First World War, which makes it one of a large group of short vowel-heavy Victorian names that never returned.

living things, lives
Two accounts, and they are hard to separate in nineteenth-century American records. The straightforward one treats Zoa as a written variant of Zoe, Greek zoe, life, the name of several early martyrs and the word used for eternal life in the Greek New Testament. The other reads it as the Greek plural zoa, living creatures, which is a real word and the source of the -zoa in scientific names. Families using it in the 1880s were almost certainly reaching for the first.
