Yvonna
Feminine · “yew”
Yvonna is a French name given an Italian ending, and the tree underneath is a yew. Yves comes from a Germanic word for that wood, and the reason a wood became a name is practical: yew was what bows were made of, so a name built on it was a name about weapons before it was a name about anything else.

The story of Yvonna
Yves became a Breton and then a French name largely through a thirteenth-century lawyer and priest from Brittany who was made a saint for defending the poor in court — one of very few lawyers to manage it. The feminine Yvonne followed and became widely used in France and then in English-speaking countries in the twentieth century. The final a in this spelling is an American addition on the Italian model, which turns a French name ending in a silent e into one ending in an audible vowel — the same move that produced Simona from Simone and Yvetta from Yvette.
Meaning
yew
The Germanic element iv or iwa names the yew tree, and it stands behind Yves, Ivo and Yvonne. Yew was the bow-wood of medieval Europe, valued above every other timber for it, so names built on the word belonged to the same family of ideas as names built on spears and swords. Yvonne is the French feminine of Yves and Yvonna adds a further ending. The derivation is not disputed.

The Tsuruko test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yvonna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tsuruko climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tsuruko's path sketches the road Yvonna is walking now.
Yvonna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is concrete and comes with a real reason behind it rather than a vague association.
- Vonnie and Onna are both usable short forms and they sit in different registers.
- The added vowel makes the ending unambiguous, which the silent French e does not.
- Yvonne is the standard spelling and this one will be rewritten as that on most documents.
- The Y at the front puzzles English readers, who expect a consonant there and get a vowel.
- The name belongs audibly to the middle of the last century, which is either the appeal or the objection.
