Yarelis
Feminine
Yarelis belongs to one of the most productive naming workshops in the Spanish-speaking Americas: the Yar- family, which also produced Yaritza, Yareli, Yaretzi, Yarelin and Yarixa. It rose through Puerto Rican, Dominican and Mexican-American communities in the 1990s and 2000s, and its history is the history of the pattern rather than of any single word.

Our story of Yarelis
Picture the naming grid rather than a dictionary. Down one side sit the stems that Spanish-speaking families in the Caribbean and Mexico treated as usable in the late twentieth century — Yar-, Mar-, Nay-, Ail-. Across the top sit the endings: -itza, -eli, -etzi, -elin, -elis, -ixa. Almost every cell in that grid has been filled by somebody, and the filled cells that sounded best spread fastest. Yarelis is a cell that worked. The -lis ending is doing specific work: it is softer than -itza and less abrupt than -eli, and it lands the stress on the middle syllable, giving the name a three-beat shape that matches Marisol and Anaisa. Understood that way, the name is not missing a meaning — it was never built to carry one. It was built to sound like it belonged to a family, and it does.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No established meaning. Popular lists gloss the Yar- names as Nahuatl, Taino or Hebrew, but none of those claims can be traced to a dictionary or a documented source, and the different glosses contradict each other. What can be shown is structural: Yar- is a productive first element in Latin American coinage, and it combines with -itza, -eli, -etzi, -elin and -elis, all of which are also live endings on other names. Yarelis is best understood as one cell of that grid rather than as a word with a translation.

Pronouncing Yarelis
yah-REH-lees
Three syllables, stress in the middle, with the Spanish y of yo at the front and a clean s at the end. English speakers sometimes stress the first syllable instead, which changes the rhythm noticeably; the middle-stress version is the one used in the communities where the name is common.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Marialuisa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yarelis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marialuisa climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marialuisa's path sketches the road Yarelis is walking now.
Yarelis sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- There is no established meaning, and any translation offered online is unsourced.
- English speakers regularly stress the wrong syllable on first reading.
- Its close cousins are numerous, so mix-ups with Yareli and Yaritza are routine.
